Madison coaches stressed teamwork and hard work to be successful in athletics and in life. These values have resulted in many personal relationships with coaches and fellow athletes that have lasted well after our playing days.

When I became a hockey coach in Portland amateur hockey, it was more important to stress to the kids how to be an outstanding teammate, how to support each other and hopefully win; but win or lose, how to have fun and enjoy the game while learning to work together. I wanted to impart the desire to be a better person as they grow up, treat others right, do the right thing. I learned these ethics not only from my own playing experience, but also from my mentor — my dad, Jim Hay (former Portland Buckeroo) — whom I watched and idolized my whole life. His work ethic and family values — whether while playing professional sports, or working his off season jobs —played a huge role in the person I've become. My wife thanks him every day!

After hockey, I began a career in retail management with Meier & Frank, which lasted over 24 years. I now am the General Manager of retail shops at the Portland Airport. Golf is my favorite form of competition today.
