Commentary:

It is challenging to try and cite any specific inspirations that I have received from being involved in athletics, because of the many instances that have become apparent to me throughout my life. These examples would include the often mentioned value of great coaches. These critically important people provided foundations for young people like me, by stressing the importance of character, teamwork, setting and attaining goals, and being a good citizen.

I have had the great good fortune to have been taught by some remarkable people, all who were also excellent coaches, including Clifford (Chief) McLean, Bob Sweet, Chuck Stevenson, Hal Ellmers, Tommy Prothero and Bob Zelinka. These coaches led by both their example and their conduct. To whatever extent I have been able to reflect their values in my own life, I am indebted to them for their leadership.

Vocationally, I started my career in the Forest Products Industry after leaving Oregon State University at the end of my senior year. I worked for two lumber companies before starting a wholesale lumber firm in 1986. I retired in 2006 after running my company for 20 years. During the time when the company was active, I utilized many, if not all of the lessons that I learned from participating in sports, including, but not limited to, the value of teamwork, long hours, executing a business plan (similar to a game plan) and the will to overcome negative events that confront small business owners each day.

With tentative hips, knees and shoulders, my favorite form of competition today is watching OSU football specifically and College football in general.
