Commentary:

Sports—basketball, soccer, golf, or whatever was being played in the back yard—have had a critical role in my development. They have offered me amazing opportunities to meet a wide range of people, learn to compete hard, enjoy wins and deal with setbacks, travel throughout the US and internationally, and develop a career in sports. Sports have continued to play a vital part of my daily life and I continue to play basketball, golf, run, and try whatever adult league sports are offered in the city where I live. Through sports I have learned to be a very hard worker, a team player and to challenge myself to keep improving in whatever I do.

I would like to thank my parents, Elaine and Greg, my brother, Michael, and my many amazing coaches, especially Jeff Peeler at Lincoln, for encouraging me to play hard and follow my talents and passion. As a girl, I always was encouraged to compete hard, even with the boys, and I never felt that being a girl was a weakness or disadvantage, in sports or other parts of life. “Tee-off from the men’s tees”, “D him up hard”, and more. With those voices in my head, I never thought about being a girl in a boys’ sports world. So to all the girls playing with the boys…keep fighting and stay on the court!

I also would like to thank Lincoln, the PIL and OSAA for providing a great launching pad for me to college sports and beyond, both academically and athletically. It never gets old representing Oregon and the PIL!
