High School Honors:

Post High School Career: Hap Piper taught PE, Health and Drivers Education and started and coached Volleyball, Basketball and Softball. She taught at Franklin High School from 1960 until retirement in 1994. She was instrumental in starting the Girls’ Basketball program at Franklin High School in 1970; four years later the Girls’ Volleyball program and soon thereafter Softball. She was an ambassador for Softball, playing first base and pitcher for Erv Lind Florists and on a traveling team that flew on Air Force planes to play teams in Taiwan, Okinawa, The Philippines and Japan. After games they would put on camps/clinics to help grow the game worldwide. She was a member of the 1964 World Series Team and was named All-American First Team. She had the winning hit in the final game of the World Series with a runner at second. She broke her bat and the hit went short into center field. She has been inducted into the Oregon Softball Hall of Fame which is located at Erv Lind Stadium at Normandale Park on 57th and Halsey, where a number of PIL teams still call home for softball teams.

Commentary:

My father was my inspiration. He played professional baseball while serving in the Canadian Army for four years while serving during World War I.

Highlight was playing catch every night in the parking lot with my father growing up.

Lasting impressions: Dad’s emphasis was always about sportsmanship and the importance of it. His favorite saying was “The people you see on the way up are the same people you are going to see on the way down.
