Commentary:

It’s so easy to see now how lucky I was growing up in the PIL district. At Grant, I had THE best coaches in soccer and track (all giving up so much time!). They were eager to teach me the right ways about the sport, to inspire me to work harder, to try and chase my sister, and to challenge me all along the way to get the best out of me they knew was there.

My coaches—Tim Copeland (soccer), Jim Tucker, Greg Cotton, Bill Donnelly, Tom Soma—and especially Mike Donahue. This collection of talent and investment into the Grant HS athletic program was RIDICULOUS! We had such a good deal. And of top of that, I am so happy to have a few extra people around me to inspire, motivate and push me to my limits. My sister Lizzy set the bar at a silly level, and fortunately I still had my parents there to inspire me with their own running and swimming accomplishments. Their fitness still inspires me.

Portland, and especially the Laurelhurst and Grant neighborhoods, did such a good job of providing me with all the opportunities and support I could ask for. This was an ideal place to grow up. Thank you PIL!
