Commentary:
After my father was killed in a car accident in 1936, my mother was left with seven children. A strong stepfather would join our family and we lived through World War II, and a devastating flood in 1948. In 1949 I would graduate in a class of 12 from Columbia Grade School, and begin my freshmen class of 648 at Jefferson. This was the beginning of my four years at Jeff, and an unbelievable influence on my life. Honors in football, a title in 1952, and being a student body officer, preceded my draft into the Army.
I returned and played 4 years of football—two each at Lewis & Clark and Portland State. In 1960 I left for San Diego, first to Chula Vista, (4 years), and Mt. Miguel high. I loved the area and my jobs. In 1965 I was hired at Palomar College as assistant Football and Head Wrestling Coach, and teaching and coaching the golf program. In 1967 I became Head Coach and Athletic Director. I served in that capacity for 10 years, from 1967 to 1976. I was then involved in developing a Golf Clothing business, and that brought my wife and me back to Portland after 36 years in San Diego.
Lastly, in 2022, I was encouraged by good friend Jon Spoelstra, to write a book—Football, Blind Luck & Other Phenomena. Jon and I grew up without grandparents and felt stories from the past could provide memories of interest for our and all grandchildren.
