Commentary:
The PIL was like a support group. It was filled with bright-eyed people extremely excited about challenging themselves and finding their potential. I remember setting almost unrealistic goals every year, and only finding support from coaches, teammates, competitors and friends. And when you’d fall down, or fail, or come up just short, you were met with encouragement and reasons for why you should never give up.
That’s not to say that the PIL was soft. When I was competing I was surrounded by competitors with top level talent and developed exciting rivalries that kept me hungry year round. Like most people being honored, I continued to compete beyond high school, developing friendships with new teammates and competitors from all over the world, but my time in this community, and its positive culture laid an amazing foundation for me as an athlete and person.
