Commentary:
My first inspiration was my older brother Mike. Without his help I would never have had the edge that enabled me to be successful athletically.
I was lucky to be coached by a Hall of Fame staff. Darrell Evertt, Bill Smethurst, Monty Rurey, Ken Trapp and Charles Lehman are all outstanding examples of the coaching profession. Of all the lessons these gentleman taught our teams, pride of place really stood out. It was emphasized daily and built a bond and identity for my teammates and myself. Others knew when they played a team from Southeast Portland.
After college I joined the Portland Fire Bureau and went back to work in my neighborhood. I worked in Southeast Portland over 30 years building upon that same pride that I learned in high school. I have coached and continue to coach Southeast kids to take pride in where they are from and to represent their school and neighborhood to the best of their ability.
