PIL HOF New Board Members-
Welcome to our new board members Joe Fowlks, Phil Johnson, Murray Todd and John Aust!
PIL HOF Members of the Month OFF hold !
Starting next month the PIL HOF MEMBERS of the Month profiles will resume thanks to the efforts of our new journalist Dick Baltus. Here in his own words is an abbreviated profile of Dick:
Dick Baltus is a 1973 graduate of Wilson High School, where he got his journalism start writing sports and record reviews for the school newspaper. He excelled on the Trojans’ frosh baseball team before washing out completely on the JV squad, the pathetic victim of pitchers suddenly throwing curveballs at him and batters hitting balls hard in his direction. A knee injury mercifully ended his career, enabling him to quit the sport before being cut, but not before earning the nickname Dr. Strangeglove from the beloved Coach Walt Looney.
After graduating from the University of Oregon School of Journalism in 1977, Dick joined the staff of The Gresham Outlook as a sportswriter before being elevated to sports editor. Three years later, his career took a hard turn left when he was hired to write, photograph and design an alumni newsletter for OHSU, moving seamlessly from Jocks to Docs.
In the 40 years since, Dick has held an array of positions in the marketing, communications and branding industry, all of which have involved a significant degree of writing. In 1993, he was lured from Portland to Roseburg to direct the marketing department of Mercy Medical Center, and four years later he was recruited to start Roseburg’s first marketing agency. He grew the agency to 18 employees before merging, in 2016, with AHM Brands, a brand development agency whose clients include Hop Valley Brewing, Abby’s Pizza, Cafe Yumm, University of Oregon, the NCAA, TrackTown USA, USA Track and Field and the World Athletic Championships 2022. In addition to being an equity partner in the agency, Dick directs the communications department, serves as chief brand strategist and cultural champion, edited a lifestyle magazine and writes quirky beer descriptions.
In 2009, his book, “Courage to be First”, chronicling the cultural transformation of an innovative hospital in The Dalles, was published by Second River Healthcare.
Dick’s brothers, Jeff and Tim, are members of the PIL Hall of Fame, an honor he clearly would also have claimed were it not for the lack of hitting and fielding skills.
WELCOME DICK AND THANK YOU!!!!!
