Bill Wiitala Senator Alumni Fieldhouse at McDaniel High School - Update
Walsh Construction received the final permit approval from the City of Portland and Multnomah County the second week of June and started the site preparation on Friday June 23rd at McDaniel High School. The drainage systems, gravel bed and footings should be done by the end of June and the concrete foundation will be poured the first week in July. The 5000 sq ft metal building components have already arrived and was made to engineering specs to handle the extensive netting loads.
The entire surface will be indoor synthetic turf and a netting system designed for all sports and safety considerations will be installed. Construction of the metal building is scheduled to be done by the end of July, but finishing work will be taking several weeks more. Walsh is very confident it will be done for the 2023-24 school year in September. The Fieldhouse will be revealed to alumni, donors and guests on Sunday September 10th in coordination with the MHS Golf Tournament at Rose City GC.
In Memoriam
We are sad to pass on the following PIL HOF Members who have recently passed away
Lee 'Laddy' Albert Davis 08/22/1929 – 06/14/2023 - Washington High School 1948, PIL HOF Inductee 2006
Lee Albert Davis, age 93, of Salem, Oregon beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 14, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 69 years Janet, sons Mark and his wife Laurie, Gregory, Paul, Todd and his wife Linda, Lynn and his wife Jennifer, Scot and his wife Ann, and 10 grandchildren. Known as Laddy to his friends growing up, Lee was born in Enid, OK where he spent the first part of his childhood. His family moved to Portland, OR where he attended Washington High School with the class of 1947. His success in football and track & field earned him a 2006 induction into the Portland Interscholastic League (PIL) Hall of Fame. He enlisted in the United States Army and served in the 82nd Airborne Division during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Lee attended Grays Harbor College where he met his wife, Janet Christensen. Lee obtained his degree in accounting from Lewis and Clark College which lead to a 31-year career with the US Department of Treasury. However, his greatest joy was raising his six sons and passing on to them the values of family, love of country, and a strong work ethic. Lee will always be remembered for his numerous talents and hobbies. You could usually find him on a tennis court, attending weekend flea markets and auctions, or piloting his Cessna 182. Lee will be missed by all those who had the privilege to be in his life.
