High School Honors: Ray boxed regularly as an amateur from age 11 through High School for the Knott Street Boxing Club. He won 50 amateur fights and five Golden Glove tournaments. He won his first fight at age 10, weighing 45 pounds.
2 Cross Country letters as a Freshman and Sophomore

Post High School Career: Ray turned pro at age 19. He won 35 bouts, 18 by knockout. In 1973 he lost a narrow decision to champion Esteban DeJesus for the North American and American Lightweight Title. In 1974 he won the NABF Lightweight title by knocking out champion Nick Alfaro. He was the #1 ranked 135-pound boxer in 1975, defending his title twice that year. He lost to Roberto Duran for the WBA championship in 1976. He was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. After retiring from the ring, he launched Lampkin General Contractor, LLC. Ray is currently semi-retired
