Commentary
Growing up in an athletic family, it seemed like I always had a basketball or softball in my hands. From an early age, my parents encouraged me to play sports, always emphasizing the value of teamwork and the importance of pushing beyond my limits. Their support was unwavering — and I will always be grateful for that foundation.
I feel incredibly fortunate to have attended Jackson High School, where the athletic programs and coaches were exceptional. It was there that I truly came to understand what it means to be part of a team — to be selfless, to support others, and to grow through both victory and defeat. These lessons came not just from competition, but from the amazing teammates and coaches I was lucky to learn from.
No one influenced me more than Coach Jim MacDicken — or as we all knew him, “Coach Mac.” His coaching went far beyond Xs and Os, beyond wins and losses. He taught us how to think critically, stay grounded, and lead with humility. Whether he was breaking down a play or reminding us to “use your head for more than a hat rack,” Coach Mac always knew how to keep us focused, learning, and laughing.
To this day, I carry his lessons with me in every part of my life. I often reflect on the deep impact he had on me — and on so many others —with his wisdom, guidance, and unshakeable belief in us. I’m forever thankful for the role he played in shaping who I am.
People often ask, “Would you go back to high school and do it all again?” For me, if I could return with a team where all players are equal — my answer is a resounding “YES.”
I am truly honored and humbled to be inducted into the PIL Hall of Fame — especially alongside so many incredible athletes and coaches I played with and deeply respect.
